It’s baby boy for Shilpa and Raj!

Mumbai: It’s time for Shilpa Shetty and hubby Raj Kundra to learn the art of changing nappies as their bundle of joy arrived early Monday morning.

The Bollywood actress delivered a healthy baby boy in a hospital in Khar, Mumbai.

Talking to a leading daily, a source close to the Kundra family said, “The baby and mother are doing fine. Shilpa`s husband Raj Kundra was by Shilpa`s side from the beginning till the time she was admitted till her delivery at the break of dawn. It was only after he saw the baby that he finally left home to go and rest. Raj and his family and Shilpa`s entire family, including mother Sunanda and sister Shamita, were present. Dr. Kiran Coelho delivered the baby at a healthcare hospital in Khar. Though Shilpa was due any day, on Sunday she had gone for a normal check up but the doctors admitted her immediately as the contractions had begun.”

Shilpa married Raj, a London based business tycoon three years back and are celebrating their first born with the greatest joy.

'Khushiyaan' selected for Punjabi film fest in Toronto

Toronto, May 17 — US-based Indian filmmaker Tirlok Malik is delighted after his Punjabi film "Khushiyaan" was selected for a screening at the first Punjabi International Film Festival (PIFF), starting May 18. The four-day festival will be held in Ontario province with events planned for the cities of Toronto, Brampton and Mississauga.

"The film is about the journey of a family and when you will watch it, you may be surprised to find yourself there," Malik, who has been a pioneer of Indian American cinema, said in a statement. In 1990, the filmmaker was nominated for the New York Emmy award for his directorial venture "Lonely in America".

"Khushiyaan" portrays the complex emotions of children who have to leave their parents back in India and what happens when they get busy with the American life. Shot both in Punjab and New York, "Khushiyaan", a thought-provoking film, is a mix of drama, comedy, and music.

Singer-actor Jasbir Jassi is making his acting debut with the film, which also features Kulbushan Kharbanda, Rama Vij, Tisca Chopra and comedian Gurpreet Guggi.

Malkit Singh honoured on Birmingham Walk of Stars

Malkit Singh has become the first Asian artist to be honoured on Birmingham's Broad Street Walk of Stars.

The Birmingham-based bhangra singer received his star at a special ceremony at the Gatecrasher venue at 18:00 BST.

The award is in recognition of his global contribution to bhangra music and is one of the genre's best-selling artists.

Singh joins the likes of Tony Iommi, Lenny Henry, Beverley Knight and Julie Walters to be awarded a star.

Broad Street Events Manager Nichole Samuels described Singh as "a global sensation", whose music "transcended all ages and cultures".

"I am proud that his contribution to Bhangra music will be officially acknowledged on our golden mile," she added.

Monsoon Wedding

In 2008, Singh received an MBE from the Queen for his Services to Punjabi music.

His tracks have also featured in films such as Bend It Like Beckham and Monsoon Wedding.

The singer has lived in Birmingham since 1984 when he first moved to the UK and started work in a denim factory.

Singh said he was "extremely delighted" to be see his name on Broad Street.

The singer added: "Although bhangra music originated in Punjab, India, it was in Birmingham that it was recognised and has since become popular amongst all communities throughout the UK."

Why sing in English: Honey Singh

Mumbai: Punjabi rapper `Yo Yo` Honey Singh believes the Indian entertainment industry is self-sufficient and can do without international celebrities. He has openly challenged international rapper Akon, and says desi singers must promote Indian languages abroad, instead of aping the west and singing in English.

"Whether it`s Hindi or Punjabi, I will sing only in the language of our country. Why is it that abroad songs in Spanish and French are sung with such great pride? Why are we so apologetic about singing to the west in Indian languages," questioned Singh.

He slams the Bollywood culture of bringing western artistes like ‘Chhammak challo’ singer Akon to sing for Hindi films.

"Too much value is attached to American and British music in our country. I want to change that. I started rapping in Punjabi to create a sense of pride in our youth for our own culture.

"In every part of the world, there`s pride in its specific culture. Why are Hindi and Punjabi songs not reaching out worldwide? Why do we invite western musicians to sing in Hindi films?

"Every time musicians from Pakistan sing in Bollywood, there`s an uproar, when Pakistani and Indian artistes are like-minded brothers. Then why should we invite some American singer to do `che-che-pe-pe` in our country," he added.

Singh, whose song ‘Mujhe neat pilade sajna’will feature in Sunil Bohra`s gangster flick ‘Mastaan’, feels India`s pool of talent is vast.

"We`ve so much talent here. In France and Germany, they speak their own language. But we Indians want to speak and sing in English. There was a time when there was a non-film pop movement started by Alisha Chinai and Baba Sehgal. It lost its way because it couldn`t build its own identity.

"I want to bring back an identity to independent music in India. Let`s sing in Bengali, Marathi, Punjabi, Bhojpuri. Do you know an international remix of a Bhojpuri song `Loote la` is played in clubs all over the world?

"We`ve lost Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan and Jagjit Singh. Before we lose the other legends, let`s take them to an international level."

As for Akon, the 25-year-old ‘Dope shope’ singer has an open challenge.

"Arrange a concert on the same day and the time in the same city for Akon and me. See who attracts a bigger crowd. I`ve seen the connectivity I have with live audiences.

"Call Akon or Enrique Iglesias. I`m willing to take them on man-to-man, musician-to-musician. I`ll hold a concert on the same day and in the same city as them.

"If I don`t attract twice the number of people as compared to them, I`ll give up music. It`s an open challenge. The only international artiste I`d have feared to take on is Micheal Jackson," he said.

Singh is confident the Indian youth will support him whole-heartedly.

"If we want to reach international standards we shouldn`t ape their language. We should try to compete with their technical standards in recording and presentation. My fans would always complain that they though they loved my music, they didn`t find the videos good enough.

"I decided to take stock of the situation. One music video alone for my song `Brown rang` cost me $100,000. We shot the video in Dubai and invited mainstream hip-hop video directors from Los Angeles. It got 4 million viewings on the internet in just one month," he said.

Now Honey Singh set to conquer Bollywood

Punjabi rapper, music producer and now celluloid hero 'Yo Yo' Honey Singh is heading to B-Town with a song "Mujhe neat pilade sajna", his first in Hindi. The song will feature in Naseeruddin Shah-starrer gangster flick "Mastaan".

"Mastaan", produced by Sunil Bohra, will see Naseeruddin sharing screen space with his son Vivaan.

Singh, whose latest album "International Village" has fetched immense success, recently made his acting debut with "Mirza: The Untold Story".

Singh says he decided to saunter into Bollywood with a song on a friend's insistence.

"I'm happy where I am. But when my friend Sunil Bohra heard and liked my first Hindi song and said he wanted to use it in his Hindi film, I said, 'Take it! It's all yours'. He came to Delhi, heard my entire catalogue and liked at least 190 of my songs," said the singer.

Unknown to Bollywood, the 25-year-old is especially popular among Punjabis in India and Britain.

"I started my career as a music producer in 2005. In 2006, my single went to be number one in the BBC world charts. I used to sing in English.

"Then on the audiences' request, I began to rap and sing in Punjabi. I was in Britain for nine years. But now for the last three years, I've been creating my music in Punjabi," he said.

And now Honey Singh is extending his reach into Hindi cinema.

"Bollywood will be a bonus. But I will head to Bollywood only when the offers come with respect for my art. I am not here to sell myself," he added. Read More
